Jonas Burgert develops figurative painting populated by enigmatic characters and complex situations. For this German artist, born in West Berlin in 1969, the figure serves to question human experience rather than simply record an individual identity. In an interview cited by Lempertz, he locates his interest in the borderlands of mental and spiritual experience. Kleinmann II provides a specific example of his approach to revisiting a work: the oil painting of 2011 followed Kleinmann, painted in 2005 and subsequently damaged beyond repair. According to the auction description, Burgert made the new version in 2010–2011 and gave it a distinct title. Drawing also contributes to his working process, with pencil and charcoal studies accompanying his investigations in painting.
