Alessio de Marchis (1684–1752), born in Naples, developed his career as a landscape painter in Rome and later worked in Urbino and Perugia. His art extends the legacy of Salvator Rosa and Gaspard Dughet, giving particular prominence to rocks, ruins and contrasts of light.
Landscape with a Bridge and Peasants, an oil on canvas owned by Rome’s National Galleries of Ancient Art, is documented on loan to the Chamber of Deputies from 1927. Its subject brings together human construction, landscape and rural figures. A Landscape with Mountains, held by the National Gallery of Puglia in Bitonto, is dated to the second quarter of the eighteenth century by Italy’s heritage catalogue. These titles illuminate a repertoire in which natural landforms and figures together organise the composition’s space.
This profile brings together identity references for Alessio de Marchis and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
