Hans-Peter Feldmann (1941–2023), born in Düsseldorf, studied painting in Linz during the 1960s. From 1968 he produced artists’ books and reproducible photographic works. His Bilderhefte bring together ordinary images, found or personally taken, whose juxtaposition shifts their meaning. This attention to the circulation of representations made him an important figure in conceptual art.
In 100 Years, completed in 2001, portraits of relatives and acquaintances aged from zero to one hundred create a collective passage through time. He also made simple interventions in older paintings, questioning the conventions of portraiture and museum display. Awarded the Hugo Boss Prize in 2010, he exhibited its hundred-thousand-dollar reward at the Guggenheim in 2011, covering the gallery walls with individual one-dollar bills.
This profile brings together identity references for Hans-Peter Feldmann and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
