Philipp Peter Roos is also associated with the name Rosa da Tivoli, a nickname that biographical tradition connects with his settlement in that Italian town. The son and pupil of Johann Heinrich Roos, he travelled to Italy at the expense of Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel, and arrived in Rome in 1677. There he is said to have been a pupil of the painter Giacinto Brandi.
The titles held in collections and recorded by sources sketch out a world in which animals and landscape have a prominent place: the Art Institute of Chicago lists Shepherdess and Sheep and Cow, both undated, while a biographical note records a Sheep Devoured by a Wolf at the Louvre and a View of the Waterfalls of Tivoli at the Vienna museum. The same note mentions a few etchings on rustic subjects, another aspect of his practice.
His career forms part of the history of a family of painters, at least eight of whose members were active mainly in Germany, Holland and Italy between 1650 and 1800. Among Philipp Peter Roos’s seven children, Cajetan, known as Gaetano de Rosa, and Jacob, known as Rosa da Napoli, also became animal painters and landscape artists. The exhibitions recorded testify to a later interest in animal painting and the family history of the Roos: Künstler sehen Tieren was presented at the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Brunswick in 1977, followed by Roos, eine deutsche Künstlerfamilie des 17. Jahrhunderts at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin in 1986. In 2010, Les toiles transalpines du musée des Beaux-Arts was shown at the Vieille Charité in Marseille from June to September. Two paintings titled Shepherd and Animals in a Landscape are also recorded at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires.
