Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld was a painter based in Vienna from 1804. He attended the Academy and received support from Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen. His repertoire encompassed literary, religious and historical subjects as well as landscapes. He also served as chief curator of the imperial picture gallery at the Belvedere.
Faust and Mephisto in the Study Room, completed in 1818, helped establish his reputation. This oil on canvas, more than three metres high, belongs to the Belvedere; Gretchen in Prison, painted in 1833, is its companion. The Spreading Pine Tree in the Brühl Valley near Mödling, dated 1838, depicts a famous tree outside Vienna. The Albertina also holds Rudolf von Habsburg and the Priest, a drawing of 1820 devoted to an episode of Austrian history.
