Helena Abreu

Helena Abreu was born in Seia in 1924. She studied drawing and painting in Porto and trained in fresco with Dórdio Gomes. She also authored school textbooks. Her practice encompasses painting and printmaking.
The municipal collection in Matosinhos holds Life in Cape Verde, an oil on canvas measuring 98 by 65 centimetres, signed and dated 1999. The Gramaxo Foundation’s museum displays a family scene by her from the collection of Maria de Fátima Gramaxo. The screenprint Abraço de Anjos, issued by the Centro Português de Serigrafia in 2005, takes a watercolour as its starting point. Printed in forty-two colours in an edition of two hundred, it translates drawing and transparent colour effects into the medium of print.
