Born in Amsterdam, Esaias van de Velde worked in Haarlem and later The Hague, where he died in 1630. He contributed to Dutch landscape painting and counted Jan van Goyen among his pupils. In the Rijksmuseum’s Cattle Ferry, signed and dated 1622, a river passes through a village; the vessel carries inhabitants and animals between the banks. Numerous small figures animate this expanse of water and land.
The National Gallery in London’s Winter Landscape, painted on wood in 1623, belongs to another seasonal strand of his practice. Washington preserves Villagers Skating on a Frozen Pond, dated 1625, drawn in black chalk and brown wash. Painting and drawing thus allowed him to return to the places and occupations of rural life.
This profile brings together identity references for Esaias van de Velde and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
