Bonaventura Genelli was a German draughtsman and painter trained at the Berlin Academy. A stay in Rome beginning in 1822 deepened his study of antiquity and the Renaissance; there he associated with Joseph Anton Koch. Later based in Munich, he worked mainly in drawing. Commissions from Count Schack encouraged his turn towards large paintings, while he moved to Weimar in 1859.
The Rape of Europa, acquired by Schack in 1859, adopts an elongated horizontal format. Hercules and Omphale, painted in 1862, shows the hero at the queen’s court, with additional friezes depicting Ganymede and the wedding procession of Bacchus and Ariadne. This arrangement recalls Renaissance wall decorations. Bacchus among the Muses, dated 1868, continues his engagement with ancient mythology on another large canvas.
