Jean Béraud paints Parisian life, particularly the activities of the affluent bourgeoisie: walks along the boulevards, performances, cafés and restaurants. His work also includes portraits and a few religious scenes. After his secondary studies at lycée Bonaparte, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he became a pupil of Léon Bonnat.
He first exhibited at the official Salon in 1872. Le Retour de l’enterrement, an oil on canvas dated 1876 and held in a private collection, marks the success he achieved that year. At the Salon, he received a third medal in 1882, followed by a second in 1883. In 1889, he received a gold medal at the Salon des artistes français and exhibited at the Paris Exposition universelle. In 1890, he was among the founders of the Société nationale des beaux-arts, of which he became vice-president. Appointed a chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1887, he was promoted to officer in 1894.
La Madeleine chez le Pharisien, dated 1891 and held at the Musée d’Orsay, testifies to the place of religious subjects in an oeuvre that also includes genre scenes and portraits. Femme élégante dans un vestibule is described as a signed oil on canvas, measuring 65 × 39 cm; it is listed as number 318 in the catalogue raisonné published by Patrick Offenstadt in 1999. In the same year, the Musée Carnavalet presents the exhibition « Jean Béraud et le Paris de la Belle Époque », from 29 September 1999 to 2 January 2000.
