Alessandro Casolani worked within the Sienese artistic milieu in the late sixteenth century, maintaining connections with Arcangelo Salimbeni and Cristofano Roncalli. In 1599 he contributed to the decoration of the Certosa of Pavia, completed by Pietro Sorri the following year. The museum in Casole d’Elsa holds several works by him within his region of origin.
His drawings accompany this religious activity. Saint Catherine of Siena Choosing the Crown of Thorns in the Louvre, dated around 1594, prepares a painting for Siena’s convent of San Gerolamo. Pen and brown wash overlay an initial sketch in black chalk. In Studies for a Crucifixion at the Metropolitan Museum, brown ink and wash instead accompany an underlying red chalk drawing, with lines framing the composition.
