The German artist Wilhelm Trübner, who lived from 1851 to 1917, is represented here, among other works, by Bildnis Fräulein St., an oil-on-canvas portrait dated around 1910. Measuring 50 × 40 cm, the work bears the monogram “WT” at the lower left. The sitter’s identity remains uncertain: she may be Fräulein Stölzel, whom Trübner is said to have nicknamed “rothe Stölzel”, in reference to the colour of her hair.
Two other depictions of “Fräulein St.” are noted in the sale catalogue; they are held at the Leopoldmuseum in Vienna and the Lentosmuseum in Linz. The same catalogue reports that the specialist Klaus Rohrandt confirmed that Trübner executed the painting and planned to include it as no. G 135 in a catalogue raisonné then in preparation. The provenance given is a private collection in North Rhine-Westphalia. The painting is also listed, with an illustration, in Joseph August Beringer’s book on Trübner, published in 1917.
This profile brings together identity references for Wilhelm Trübner and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
