Jan Davidszoon de Heem, born in Utrecht in 1606 and active notably in Antwerp, devoted his work to still life. Flowers, fruit, glasses and precious objects form a repertoire in which close observation accompanies the staging of abundance. His early paintings could nevertheless be more restrained: Still Life with Books and a Violin of 1628, at the Mauritshuis, uses brown and grey tones while suggesting the fragility of human existence.
In Vase of Flowers, painted around 1670 and also at the Mauritshuis, the bouquet spreads freely beyond its container, accompanied by precisely depicted insects. The glass reflects the studio window. His Garland of Fruit and Flowers, probably made between 1650 and 1660, brings together plants from different seasons. Its visible richness therefore depends on an imagined composition, rather than the transcription of an arrangement observed at a single moment.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Davidsz. de Heem and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
