Альберт Вайсгербер

Albert Weisgerber (1878–1915), born in St. Ingbert, first trained in decorative painting in Kaiserslautern before continuing his studies in Munich. At the Academy of Fine Arts he studied under Gabriel Hackl and Franz von Stuck. Drawing for the magazine Jugend from 1897, he combined illustration and poster design with painting. Visits to Paris brought him into contact with Matisse and the work of Manet, Cézanne and Toulouse-Lautrec.

His portraits, café scenes and festive subjects reveal a brighter palette and an increasingly flattened treatment of form. A journey to Florence in 1909 deepened his interest in Italian masters and prompted his first paintings of Saint Sebastian. In 1913 he became the first president of the New Munich Secession. Called up during the First World War, he was killed near Fromelles in May 1915.

This profile brings together identity references for Альберт Вайсгербер and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
