Franz von Stuck (1863–1928), born in Tettenweis, studied in Munich and began with decorative designs and illustrations. The Guardian of Paradise established his reputation as a painter in 1889. A cofounder of the Munich Secession in 1892, he designed its poster featuring Athena’s head. Appointed professor at the academy in 1895, he taught students including Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
His Symbolist work draws on myths, allegories and the tensions of desire. Sin, exhibited in 1893, combines a female figure, a serpent and threatening darkness. Painting, sculpture and decorative arts belong to a shared ambition in his practice. The villa he designed in Munich in 1897–1898, encompassing architecture, furnishings and decoration, offers the most comprehensive expression of his pursuit of unity between the arts.
