James Rosenquist (1933–2017), an American painter associated with Pop Art, transforms images from advertising and popular culture into material for visual art. Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, he dies in New York. After studying at the University of Minnesota from 1952 to 1954, a grant enables him to move to New York in 1955 to study at the Art Students League.
In works designated as “Source Collages”, the process of composition remains visible: Rosenquist layers cut-out photographs or illustrations, selects a crop, then translates the image into large-format painting. Works listed by the Art Institute of Chicago include Volunteer (1963/64), See-Saw, Class Systems (1968) and Cold Light (1971); F-111, dated 1964–1965, is held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Sister Shrieks, recorded in the artist’s archives under number 87/04, is listed in the 2005 exhibition Blumenmythos – von Vincent van Gogh bis Jeff Koons at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen; there it bears catalogue number 142 and is reproduced. According to the published provenance, the work is mentioned at the Wetterling Galleries in Stockholm, where it was acquired in 1987; the collection of Theodor and Isabella Dalenson in Stockholm is mentioned subsequently, followed by a private collection in Switzerland.
This profile brings together identity references for James Rosenquist and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
