Boris Petrovič Svešnikov (1927–1998), also transliterated Boris Sveshnikov, was a Russian painter, draughtsman and book illustrator. While studying at the Moscow Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts, he was arrested in 1946 on fabricated charges of anti-Soviet conspiracy. Sentenced to eight years in camps, he worked near Ukhta and made drawings there. After his release he lived in Tarusa before returning to Moscow in 1956.
Rehabilitated that year, he subsequently joined the artists’ union and worked in book illustration. His independent practice also connected him with Moscow’s nonconformist artistic circles. Drawings made during imprisonment were published in the Paris almanac Apollo-77 in 1977, documenting artistic work sustained under repression. His career combined professional graphic work with an independent painterly investigation profoundly marked by these experiences.
This profile brings together identity references for Boris Sveshnikov and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
