The Venetian painter and printmaker Giandomenico Tiepolo (1727–1804) trained in the workshop of his father, Giambattista, with whom he became a close collaborator. The eldest son of Giambattista and Maria Cecilia Guardi, he was also the brother of Lorenzo. Noted for his drawing ability from the age of sixteen, he produced his first known painted series, a fourteen-canvas Way of the Cross for the church of San Polo in Venice, between 1747 and 1749. At the same time, in 1748–1749, he devoted himself to printmaking and reproduced paintings by his father.
From 1750 to 1753, he accompanied Giambattista to the Würzburg Residence, where they worked for Prince-Bishop Carl Philipp von Greiffenklau. In 1757, the two artists painted the frescoes at Villa Valmarana Ai Nani in Vicenza. Giandomenico decorated the Foresteria, where he depicted, among other subjects, the Venetian peasantry, genre scenes and chinoiserie. In 1762, he followed his father once again, this time to Madrid, and took part in the creation of the Gloria di Spagna at the Royal Palace.
An active participant in Venice’s artistic life, he was a founding member of its Academy in 1756, was appointed a master there in 1772 and became its president in 1783. In 1774, in homage to his father, he published the first edition of a catalogue of works conceived and engraved by Giambattista, with additional prints by Giandomenico and Lorenzo. In the same year that he was appointed president of the Academy, he worked on the decoration of the Doge’s Palace in Genoa and painted The Glory of Saint James Giustiniani. The fresco has disappeared; a sketch for it is held at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Works recorded in public collections include Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery (1751), at the Louvre, and The Appearance of the Three Angels to Abraham (1773–1774), at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice.
