Francina Ndimande, born in 1940, is a South African painter associated with the Ndebele mural tradition. She is among the artists included in Amandebele, an illustrated publication of 1991 devoted to house painting and dress decoration in KwaNdebele. This context places her work within a visual culture in which architectural surfaces and ornamental practices occupy a central role.
In 2002, Francina Ndala Ndimande and Angelina Ndimande took part in the programme at New York’s Schomburg Center accompanying The Art of African Women: Empowering Traditions. A mural was specially commissioned for the centre. Francina’s name, also written Franzina, appears in the exhibition of the Wilploo Collection at Rijksmuseum Twenthe, marking the presentation of her work in several institutional settings beyond its original cultural environment.
