Gordon Mallet McCouch (1885–1956), an American artist, was a painter, printmaker and draughtsman. Born in Philadelphia, he died in Locarno. From 1902 to 1905, he attended Howard Pyle’s art school, then worked as an illustrator for magazines and newspapers. In 1911, he emigrated to Europe and settled in Munich, where he attended classes at the Academy of Fine Arts with Heinrich von Zügel. Through Carl von Marr, he came into contact with modern art circles, including representatives of Der Blaue Reiter. In 1913, he exhibited at the first German Autumn Salon.
At the beginning of the First World War, he took refuge with his wife in Switzerland, first in Zurich, then in Zug in 1916. From 1917, he lived in Ascona, where he met numerous internationally renowned artists, before settling in Ronco sopra Ascona in 1922. In 1924, he was among the co-founders of the artists’ association “Der Grosse Bär” and became friends with Walter Helbig. After the association was dissolved in 1941, he joined the “Società Amici delle Belle Arti” in Ascona.
He presented his work in numerous exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad. Retrospectives were devoted to him in 1982 and 2006 at the municipal museum of modern art in Ascona, and in 2015 at the Pinacoteca cantonale Giovanni Züst in Rancate.
