For Marco Gastini, painting is not limited to the surface: its relationship to space, both mental and physical, runs through his artistic language, while the works extend beyond canvas, paper or other supports to encompass walls and their surroundings. Born in Turin in 1938, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts there in 1960. From 1966, he taught at an art secondary school, where he remained until 1985.
In 1970, his first casts in lead and antimony made on walls appeared: material and support thus became part of a practice that engages painting beyond the traditional frame. After a period of works without colour, in white, black and graffiti on light surfaces, colour returned with force. Gastini then worked with a range of materials — wood, stone, parchment, iron, chalk or terracotta — whose colours also informed his choices. This extension into space also took on an architectural and urban dimension: he created installations on façades, in squares and beneath loggias.
Invited to the Venice Biennale in 1976 and 1982, he also presented his work at the Centre d’Art Contemporain in Geneva in 1980. The biographical exhibition list also mentions Galerie Brandstetter & Wyss, in Zurich, in 1990. Marco Gastini lived from 1938 to 2018.
