Anju Dodiya graduated from Mumbai's Sir J. J. School of Art in 1986 and developed a painting practice in which the human figure meets psychological exploration. Following an initially largely abstract phase, anthropomorphic images became a lasting feature of her work. Frequently combined, watercolour and charcoal offer different means of constructing these presences. Her interest in psychoanalysis accompanies an attention to contemporary life: newspapers, photographs of fashion models and cinema supply her visual repertoire. Media images consequently enter work concerned with the mind and human experience. Presented at the Venice Biennale and in European exhibitions, her work has also circulated through monographic publications. These different contexts extend an investigation informed by cultural references and social concerns.
This profile brings together identity references for Anju Dodiya and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
