Born in Paris on 28 June 1872, Gustave Camille Gaston Cariot is described as a French painter associated with the Pointillist movement. His work includes landscapes of Brittany and the Rhineland, as well as rural scenes, in a style described as Pointillist; his painting attends to variations in light and colour over the seasons.
This attention to the seasons is also found in “Le Poème des saisons”, a series of rural landscapes in which each painting represents a different month. Cariot exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1903; according to Masterworks Academy, that year he presented the complete series there, comprising twelve paintings, one for each month. In 1909, he also exhibited with La Société Moderne, a group founded by the painter Emmanuel de la Villeon.
Among the dated works are “Les Toits de Paris, au coucher de soleil” (1899), “Le Poème des saisons, Fructidor” (1901) and “Le pont Neuf à Paris” (1941). A Rhineland landscape with flowering fields, dated 1929, was sold at Koller for CHF 25,000, including the buyer’s premium. A retrospective exhibition of his work is recorded at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1951.
