Albert Bredow’s career took him through Riga, Moscow and St Petersburg, where he worked as a theatre set designer. He worked in Riga from 1852 to 1855, then travelled to Moscow in 1856, invited by the Directorate of the Imperial Theatres, and worked there until 1862. At the Bolshoi Theatre, he designed sets for the ballet Le Corsaire and the opera La Traviata in 1858, and for the opera Rusalka in 1859. From 1860 to 1871, he was a set designer for the Imperial Theatres in St Petersburg; at the Mariinsky Theatre, he worked on Une vie pour le tsar in 1860, among other productions. Illustrations of his sets for this opera were published as an album in 1863.
In 1868, Bredow began studying at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg, where he remained until 1871. At the Academy’s art exhibitions, he presented landscapes of Germany and Russia, demonstrating a practice that extended beyond stage design. Drawings of his sets are held in the collection of the Bachruschin Theatre Museum in Moscow. According to the State Catalogue of the Museum Fund of Russia, more than 80 of his works are held in Russian museums. The paintings from the end of his life are characterised by Romanticism, a taste for the fantastic and for fairy tales.
