Hjalmar Munsterhjelm belonged to the generation of Finnish landscape painters trained in Germany during the nineteenth century. He studied in Düsseldorf between 1860 and 1865, then in Karlsruhe, continuing his training with Hans Gude. His career unfolded mainly in Finland, alongside stays in Munich, around Lake Chiemsee and in Paris.
The Häme countryside, lakeshores, snow-covered archipelagos and moonlit nights were among his favourite subjects. He gave winter landscape an important place within Finnish painting. Forest Pool in Moonlight, held by Turku Art Museum, demonstrates his interest in nocturnal atmosphere. Landscape with a Lake in Häme of 1884 represents another side of his repertoire, devoted to rural life in summer. His work thus encompasses different hours and seasons within the Finnish landscape.
