Floris van Schooten, also known as Floris Gerritsz. van Schooten, worked in Haarlem and became dean of its guild in 1639. He painted meal still lifes and kitchen scenes. The Frans Hals Museum holds his Still Life with Herrings, Oysters and Smoking Accessories, dated around 1625, an example of his attention to food and everyday objects.
In Still Life with Fruit and Vegetables, with Christ at Emmaus in the Background, painted around 1630 and held by the Rijksmuseum, abundant food and two maidservants occupy the foreground. Curtains reveal the biblical episode beyond. Still Life with Ham, held by the Louvre, bears the monogram F.V.S. on a knife blade. Restituted to Mathilde Javal’s heirs in 2023, the painting entered the museum’s collection through their donation in 2024.
