Jan Claeissens was a painter from Bruges, active during the first half of the seventeenth century. A son of Pieter Claeissens II, he belonged to an artistic family established in the city. Jesus and the Ten Lepers, held in the collections of Saint John’s Hospital in Bruges, bears his signature and the date 1632. In this oil on canvas, Christ receives the sick in a landscape with buildings and rocks.
In 1634, he painted a historicised group portrait of the brothers and sisters of Saint Mary Magdalene’s Hospital. Brecht Dewilde connects it with an older Christ with Martha and Mary. This reuse demonstrates the persistence of earlier pictorial models, linking religious narrative with the memory of Bruges’s hospital communities.
