Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, known as Il Grechetto, was a Genoese painter and etcher of the seventeenth century. Shepherds and herds occupy an important place in his pastoral landscapes. He developed a distinctive practice of drawing with oil paint on paper, represented by the early Shepherd Driving a Flock in the Royal Collection.
Castiglione also ranks among the pioneers of monotype. In this process, ink is manipulated directly on a plate through addition or removal before an impression is taken on paper. His Nativity with Angels demonstrates the technique’s possibilities. Etching formed another part of his practice: The Genius of Castiglione, held by the Metropolitan Museum, presents an allegorical figure surrounded by objects. Despite the print’s title, the central character is not a self-portrait of the artist.
