Lee Ufan, born in Korea and based in Japan from 1956, brings painting and sculpture together with theoretical reflection. He became a central figure in Mono-ha, a movement examining relationships between things and space. In sculptures titled Relatum, stones encounter industrial materials such as iron and glass. Their arrangement matters as much as the individual elements, inviting viewers to perceive their reciprocal presence.
His paintings explore a comparable economy of means. In the From Point and From Line series, gestures are repeated as the amount of pigment diminishes, making duration and the exhaustion of colour visible. Areas left untouched participate fully in the work. Lee thus directs the viewer’s attention towards intervals, materials and the relationships that take shape between the work, its surroundings and the person looking at it.
This profile brings together identity references for Lee Ufan and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
