Caspar Scheuren (1810–1887), born in Aachen, entered the Düsseldorf Academy in 1829 to study landscape painting. Alongside his paintings, drawings and watercolours develop a taste for arabesques, combining views and ornament in albums, diplomas and title pages. The design of the individual sheet becomes a significant part of this practice.
View of Benrath Palace, dated 1835–1840 and held by the Museum für Gartenkunst, depicts the western façade behind a flower garden. Black pen and grey wash on wove paper connect architecture with its landscape setting. In Hofgärtnerhaus (1858), at Düsseldorf’s Stadtmuseum, ink heightened with watercolour describes another building associated with a garden. These sheets demonstrate his attention to Rhineland sites and to relationships between buildings and vegetation within a unified pictorial space.
This profile brings together identity references for Caspar Scheuren and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
