Mikhail Larionov

Born : 1881Died : 1964Documented citizenships : France

Michel Larionov, also known as Mikhail (1881–1964), was born in Tiraspol and trained in Moscow, where he met Natalia Goncharova. A figure in the Russian avant-garde, he combined Fauvist colour, folk art and references to icons in his Neo-Primitivist work. He participated in the Jack of Diamonds before forming the Donkey's Tail in 1912. With Goncharova, he developed Rayonism, using intersecting beams of colour to traverse forms.

Sunny Day, dated 1913–1914 by the Centre Pompidou, combines oil paint with collaged paper pulp, turning light into an abstract, material structure. Larionov subsequently worked with Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and spent time in Switzerland, among other countries. Settling permanently in Paris in 1919, he continued his activities as a painter and designer for the stage.
