Antonio Balestra trained in Venice with Antonio Bellucci and then in Carlo Maratti’s workshop in Rome. His activity between Venice and Verona encompassed altarpieces and secular narratives before he settled permanently in his native city in 1718. Isaiah at the Museo di Castelvecchio, painted in 1707, reveals his attention to the prophet’s face and the handling of the mantle; red coals enliven the composition.
His work extended to illustrated books. For Alessandro Pompei’s volume on Michele Sanmicheli’s architectural orders, published in 1735, Balestra supplied the frontispiece, ornaments and portraits. Prints also circulated his compositions: a Virgin and Child with saints was engraved in 1739 by Johann Jakob Frey the Elder after Balestra. The design and its engraved interpretation therefore belong to distinct makers.
This profile brings together identity references for Antonio Balestra and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
