António Carneiro

Born : 1872Died : 1930Documented citizenships : Portugal

António Carneiro was a Portuguese painter associated with Symbolism. Following his training in Porto, he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He later taught in Porto and participated in literary life, notably around the journal A Águia. Portraiture occupied a major place in his work as a painter.

His triptych A Vida, developed between Paris and Porto around the turn of the century, received an award at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. It places the cycle of life within a symbolic world. Family portraits, Portuguese landscapes and watercolours brought back from Brazil reveal other aspects of his work. The museum in Amarante stresses the poetic atmosphere of his landscapes, which extends beyond a straightforward pursuit of picturesque views.

This profile brings together identity references for António Carneiro and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
