Scott Noel, born in Charlotte in 1955, developed his career in Philadelphia, moving there in 1978 after studying at Washington University in Saint Louis. A painter and teacher, he works with the human figure, still life and the cityscape. He began teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1996, connecting his practice with the artistic life of the city.
Portrait of Lauren with Still Life, dated 1999, explores the working relationship between painter and model, a recurring subject in his studio compositions. In Expanding the Convention Center of 2009, an urban scene painted in oil extends across three linen panels. Conversation in the Studio, held by the Woodmere Museum, continues his attention to the studio. These works bring lived space, people and objects together within the practice of figurative painting.
