Giuseppe Angeli

Giuseppe Angeli worked in the Venetian workshop of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, becoming an important collaborator. An inscription on the back of a painting dated 1745 documents his leading role in the studio. He also participated in the Academy of Venice, taking responsibility for life drawing in 1756 and becoming its president in 1772.

Elijah Taken Up in a Chariot of Fire, in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, came from San Giorgio in Alga. Painted around 1740–1755, it arranges horses, clouds and drapery along an ascending diagonal, with Elisha kneeling below. The museum also preserves An Elderly Bishop, a study in black, white and red chalk made around 1750. This drawing offers a focused view of his treatment of the figure alongside his larger religious compositions.

This profile brings together identity references for Giuseppe Angeli and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
