Guglielmo Ciardi studied at the Academy of Venice with the landscape painter Domenico Bresolin, who encouraged work outdoors. His journey to Florence, Rome and Naples in 1868 brought him into contact with the Macchiaioli, Nino Costa and painters associated with Resina. In 1894 he succeeded Bresolin as professor of landscape and marine painting at the Venetian academy.
The lagoon became a central setting for his exploration of light. Morning on the Giudecca, painted in 1892 and held by the Museo Revoltella in Trieste, depicts the Zitelle waterfront, boats and pedestrians beneath a cloudy sky. Browns and greys, ordered perspective and a light touch establish the atmosphere. The museum acquired the canvas at the international exhibition in Munich during the year in which it was painted.
