Giovanni Battista Cimaroli trained with Antonio Aureggio and Antonio Calza, then spent time in Bologna before settling in Venice, where he is documented by 1722. A landscape specialist, he participated in collaborative projects involving painters with different skills. These included the allegorical tombs of British notables commissioned through the intermediary Owen McSwiny.
Cimaroli supplied landscapes for these compositions, while artists such as Piazzetta or Pittoni painted the figures. The Allegorical Tomb of John Somers combined his contribution with those of Canaletto and Piazzetta. A reduced grisaille version held by the National Trust records the preparation of the original for reproduction as a print. Landscape with Cattle near a River in the Royal Collection, dated around 1720–1750, belongs to a group of four oval paintings.
