Antonio Zucchi

Born : 1726Died : 1795

Antonio Zucchi's painting helped stage learning and the taste for antiquity within British houses. At Nostell Priory, A Greek Philosopher and Disciples, an oil painting of 1767, belongs to ten wall paintings devoted to classical learning and the arts, commissioned by Sir Rowland Winn. The individual picture forms part of a larger decorative ensemble.

At Saltram, Fountain with Women washing Clothes, dated 1779–1781, belongs to nine decorative panels framed to Robert Adam's designs. Painting and architecture thus form a shared programme. The Portrait of James Adam, painted in Rome in 1763 and jointly acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland and the Victoria and Albert Museum, applies this language to portraiture: dividers, antique sculptures and the architect's invented capital define his professional ambition.

This profile brings together identity references for Antonio Zucchi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
