Eugenio Spreafico

Born : 1856Died : 1919

Eugenio Spreafico (1856–1919), born in Monza, trained at the Brera Academy under Giuseppe Bertini and Raffaele Casnedi. His career combines sentimental scenes and Brianza landscapes, exploring relationships between figures and their surroundings. Réverie, painted in 1891 and held by Monza’s civic museums, shows a young woman sitting on a sofa and holding violets. Subdued light draws attention to her face and hands.

This intimacy contrasts with the commemorative purpose of the portrait of Giuseppe Pennati, a benefactor of Monza’s hospital, dated after 1903 to around 1909 by the regional catalogue. A dark background and restrained pose give the sitter an austere presence. From private leisure to public remembrance, these works reveal two different functions of the human figure within his painting.

This profile brings together identity references for Eugenio Spreafico and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
