Esther Mahlangu

Born : 1935Documented citizenships : South Africa

Esther Mahlangu was born near Middelburg in South Africa in 1935. She learned Ndebele wall painting and beadwork from her mother and grandmother. She developed this tradition on new surfaces while passing on her techniques through a school established at her home in Mabhoko. Her compositions emphasise straight lines, balance and geometric repetition.

In Untitled of 1990, vivid colours and black borders transfer the visual language of painted houses onto canvas. Mahlangu works freehand, without a ruler or preparatory sketches. In 1991, she applied these patterns to a BMW Art Car. For the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, she transformed a three-storey wall into an expansive coloured composition in 1994, working with a team of assistants.

This profile brings together identity references for Esther Mahlangu and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
