Élisabeth Chaplin developed her career between France and Italy, with Florence as an important centre. As a young artist in Fiesole, she visited Francesco Gioli's studio, met Giovanni Fattori and supplemented her training by copying works in the Uffizi. Her first large canvases preceded exhibitions in Venice and Paris. After several years in Rome, she spent a long period in the French capital, where she made portraits alongside murals and designs for decorative tapestries. Moving between easel painting and decoration expanded both the scale and the uses of her work. Retrospectives in Florence and Paris reflected her growing recognition. Her gift to the City of Florence and the substantial holdings at the Palazzo Pitti established a lasting place for her work in Tuscan artistic life.
This profile brings together identity references for Elisabeth Chaplin and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
