Tomi Ungerer (1931–2019), born in Strasbourg, was an Alsatian draughtsman, illustrator and author. The annexation of Alsace and the war marked his childhood. Moving to New York in 1956, he developed a career illustrating for the press and advertising while also creating children's books. The Three Robbers and Moon Man are among his best-known titles.
His graphic work ranges from humour to satirical drawing and political posters. He notably challenged racism and the Vietnam War, using economical imagery to strengthen its impact. After a period in Canada, he settled in Ireland. The Hans Christian Andersen Award, received in 1998, recognised his illustration work. The Strasbourg museum bearing his name holds a substantial donation of his drawings and presents the diversity of his practice.
