Adriaen van Utrecht (1599–1653), born in Antwerp, was a Flemish painter specialising in still life. His career included journeys through Germany, France and Italy. His Italian stay broadened his knowledge of the genre beyond Antwerp’s traditions through contact with developments in Italian still-life painting.
Still Life with Fruit, Vegetables and a Parrot, signed and dated 1646, illustrates the expansive character of his compositions. On a large canvas, fruit and vegetables accumulate across a table and in a woven basket, while a parrot and a monkey animate the scene. This abundance combines observation of natural produce with pictorial staging. The Lempertz catalogue places him alongside Frans Snyders and Jan Fyt, while also drawing attention to the international horizons that informed his artistic development.
This profile brings together identity references for Adriaen van Utrecht and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
