Figures and animals establish the scale of Adriaen van de Velde’s landscapes (1636–1672). The Dutch painter and etcher, a son of Willem van de Velde the Elder, trained with his father and then with Jan Wijnants in Haarlem. He depicted meadows with cattle, shepherds in Italianate landscapes and coastal scenes. He also contributed figures and animals to compositions by Jan Hackaert and Jan van der Heyden. His etchings revisit pastoral subjects, using contours and untouched areas of paper to create luminosity. The Louvre holds Paysage : animaux à la rivière, dated 1664, while La Plage à Scheveningen is in Kassel. These works illustrate the range of settings within his landscape practice.
