Marcos Castillo

Born : 1897Died : 1966Documented citizenships : Venezuela

Marcos Castillo (1897–1966) was a Venezuelan painter born in Caracas, where he also died. He entered the city's Academy of Fine Arts in 1917 and taught painting and composition there from 1922. Artists renewing Venezuelan landscape painting, particularly Emilio Boggio, helped shape his visual development. Following his first solo exhibition in Caracas in 1926, he made a brief visit to Paris.

Castillo concentrated on colour and the organisation of forms, developing his investigations through the study of Cézanne. Still life occupies an important place in his work. In 1940 he received the National Painting Prize at the first official annual salon of Venezuelan art. Exhibitions at Caracas's fine arts museum in 1944 and 1950 accompanied a career combining individual creation with teaching.

This profile brings together identity references for Marcos Castillo and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
