Cesare Maggi

Born : 1881Died : 1961Documented citizenships : Italy

An Italian painter associated with the second generation of Divisionists, Cesare Maggi developed a body of work in which mountain landscapes occupy a central place. His attention to the perception of reflections of light and colour, in his mature work, accompanies an increasing simplification of the subject. Born in Rome on 13 January 1881 and died in Turin in 1961, he studied in 1897 with Vittorio Matteo Corcos, then with Gaetano Esposito in Naples. He made his debut in Florence in 1898 at the Esposizione Annuale della Società di Belle Arti di Firenze. After a short stay in Engadine, he returned to Milan before settling in Turin.

His commercial collaboration with Alberto Grubicy continued until 1913. In 1912, the Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte in Venice devoted an entire room to his work. After a period devoted to portraiture, his mature work focused mainly on landscapes, treated with an increasingly simplified subject. In 1936, he was appointed to the chair of painting at the Accademia Albertina in Turin.
