Adriaen Brouwer, a painter and draughtsman from the Southern Netherlands, is thought to have been born in Oudenaarde around 1605 or 1606; he died in 1638 and was buried in Antwerp on 1 February. His work focuses on scenes of peasant life and tavern life: dancing, card games, smokers, drinkers and brawls are recurring subjects. The liveliness of the figures and a keen sense of observation are noted among the characteristics of these compositions. In part of his output, the composition places an isolated figure in the foreground as the painting’s main subject.
The documentary evidence traces a path through several cities in the Low Countries: on 23 July 1625, Brouwer appears as a witness in a document concerning a transaction involving paintings and Barend van Someren and Adriaen Van Nieuwlandt. Documents subsequently attest to his presence in Amsterdam from 1626. In Haarlem, he is cited as an amateur member of the chamber of rhetoric Liefde boven Al. In 1631, he returned to Antwerp and was enrolled in the local Guild of Saint Luke that same year. From 1634, he is thought to have lived with the engraver Paulus Pontius in Antwerp.
Brouwer spent some time in prison, for reasons that have not been established; Rubens, with whom he was connected, is said to have intervened at least once to secure his release. Rubens and Rembrandt owned several of his paintings.
Several dozen paintings and several drawings are attributed to him, but these attributions are often uncertain; he very rarely signed and dated his works. A Peasant Meal, dated around 1628, is recorded at the Kunsthaus Zürich. Village Scene with Men Drinking, dated to around 1631–1635, is in the collection of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.
