Pierre-Narcisse Guérin made history painting a theatre of human passions, drawing on stories from antiquity. Trained at the royal academy and under Jean-Baptiste Regnault, he won the Prix de Rome in 1797 with La Mort de Caton d’Utique. The success of Le Retour de Marcus Sextus at the Salon of 1799 established his reputation. In Phèdre et Hippolyte and Andromaque et Pyrrhus, ancient figures provide subjects of confrontation and mourning. His work also included imperial commissions: Bonaparte fait grâce aux révoltés du Caire was exhibited in 1808. Appointed professor at the École des beaux-arts in 1816, Guérin continued his large compositions. La Mort de Priam, begun in 1822 and left unfinished, is held by the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Angers.
