Arturo Bonfanti

Born : 1905Died : 1977Documented citizenships : Italy

The passage from figuration to abstraction shapes the career of Arturo Bonfanti, born in Bergamo in 1905. Trained at the Andrea Fantoni art school and then by Angiolo Alebardi, he moved to Milan in 1926 and worked in interior design and publishing graphics. Paper Talks of 1939 and Abstraction 9 of 1940 mark stages in his search for an independent visual language. Relationships between lines, shapes and colours gradually took precedence over references to objects, leading to the abandonment of figuration from 1950. His travels after 1946 brought him to Paris and Zurich, among other cities, and he formed connections with Alberto Magnelli, Hans Arp and Max Bill. This openness accompanies work attentive to balanced surfaces and chromatic relationships.

This profile brings together identity references for Arturo Bonfanti and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
