Born in Pittsfield in 1938, Jim Nutt is an American artist who graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1965. He helped establish the Hairy Who group alongside Gladys Nilsson, Karl Wirsum and others. His work explores an inventive figuration attentive to the expressive possibilities of distortion. Painting on Plexiglas and references to pinball machines and hand-painted signs connect his practice with everyday visual culture. Since the 1990s, imaginary portraits of women have occupied an important place in his work, combining exaggerated features and retro hairstyles with precise execution. An exhibition at David Nolan Gallery in New York in 2023 continued this career, developed over several decades.
This profile brings together identity references for Jim Nutt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
