Arnaldo Ferraguti trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples before becoming close to Francesco Paolo Michetti and his circle in Francavilla al Mare. Peasant life and popular subjects occupy an important place in his work. In Alla vanga, a large composition exhibited from 1890, a line of labourers of different ages digs the ground: the monumental scale gives rural work a central presence. He also used pastel and developed a practice as an illustrator, notably for Edmondo De Amicis’s Cuore and Giovanni Verga’s Vita dei campi. Settling in Pallanza brought teaching and connections with the literary environment of the Treves family. Painting and illustration thus share an attention to figures and narratives from social life.
